Fiona tumbled in recreational programs before joining the Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Team when she was 12.
“I loved the rigorous training on team and learning new skills – it was so much fun – I knew I had found my sport.”
After an exciting conclusion to her first year as level 10, Fiona is already looking forward to next year.
Following an enormously exciting showing at the Region VI Championship where Fiona finished first in the all around,
bars and beam, she is ecstatic over her experience at J.O. Nationals in May where she finished 15th in the all around
and placed 8th on beam. Fiona is spending her summer working on new skills in preparation for her second year as a
level 10, and she is looking forward to competing gymnastics in college the year after.
Fiona is a rising senior at the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS), a boutique public school in New York City
located on 48th street, just two blocks from Times Square. Fiona matriculates in the musical theater department where
she studies singing, acting and dance in addition to the regular course of academic study. While many of Fiona’s
classmates are auditioning and working in film, television and theater, Fiona stands out as the only athlete in the school.
“My school friends are curious about gymnastics and how different my life is from theirs, and we have fun talking about it.
I feel like my musical theater studies affect how I do my gymnastics routines and the strength I build from my sport
enhances my performances in school.”
It was a memorable moment when Fiona sang the national anthem to open the level 9 New York State meet in 2005, which she then
proceeded to win. She is not sure which performance made her more nervous, the singing or the gymnastics.
Practice schedule permitting, Fiona loves to hop the subway to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. When she cannot make it to the
game, Fiona borrows her Dad’s life-size cut-out of Jason Giambi and tunes in on the radio. Go Yankees!
